ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are the safety features built into most cars manufactured from around 2015 onwards. They rely on a forward-facing camera, usually mounted near the rear-view mirror, to see the road ahead.

When the windscreen is replaced, the camera is removed from the old glass and refitted to the new one. Even a sub-millimetre misalignment can cause the system to misread distances, lane markings, or obstacles.

Why recalibration matters

An uncalibrated ADAS camera can cause lane-keep assist to steer incorrectly, automatic emergency braking to activate too late or too early, or traffic sign recognition to misread speed limits. These are not theoretical risks — they are the documented outcomes of incorrect calibration.

UK insurers and Thatcham Research treat ADAS recalibration as a mandatory step following windscreen replacement on ADAS-equipped vehicles.

What should a good windscreen company do?

Before fitting: check the vehicle for ADAS and confirm what calibration the manufacturer requires.

During fitting: use the correct glass with the right optical properties — not all replacement windscreens are compatible with ADAS cameras.

After fitting: complete the manufacturer’s specified calibration procedure (static, dynamic, or both) and provide a calibration certificate as auditable evidence.

Laminated glass is two layers of glass bonded with a plastic interlayer — this is what your windscreen is made from. It holds together on impact rather than shattering. Toughened glass is heat-treated to be stronger than standard glass, but when it breaks it shatters into small, relatively safe pieces. Most side and rear windows use toughened glass, although some newer vehicles now use laminated glass for side windows as well.

Yes — some newer vehicles come with laminated side glass as standard, and it can be specified as a replacement option on many models. Laminated side glass is quieter, offers better UV protection, and is harder to break into. Ask us when you call and we will confirm what is available for your vehicle.

Yes. There is no legal restriction on the tint level (visible light transmittance) for rear windows or the rear windscreen in the UK. The legal limits only apply to the windscreen (minimum 75% VLT) and the front side windows (minimum 70% VLT). Factory-fitted privacy glass on rear windows is legal regardless of how dark it is.

Factory privacy glass is tinted during manufacturing — the colour is in the glass itself. Aftermarket tint film is a thin layer applied to the inside surface of the glass after fitting. Both reduce visibility into the vehicle, but factory glass tends to be more durable and does not peel, bubble or degrade over time. If your vehicle came with privacy glass and you need a replacement, we match the original tint.

Yes — panoramic roof and sunroof glass is a specialist job that we cover. We fit the replacement at your home, workplace or depot, the same as any other glass. Panoramic roof glass is typically laminated and may include features like solar coating or rain sensors.
